Knowing how you read

Strategies for Online Learning—Week 2, Assignment 1

Using the material and tips from the lectures and your textbook, complete the following:

  • Choose a long magazine article or novel and read it for 10 minutes.
  • Do the same with a couple of different textbooks (there are many sources in the online library that can estimate textbooks, as well).
  • After reading each type, simply multiply the number of pages you were able to read by 6 to determine how much you can read per hour. Always round your estimate down or decrease it slightly, as most people take small breaks when reading for long periods of time, so you’ll want to take this into account.
  • Non-traditional students; you have already noted that an online class requires much more reading than your past experiences. Use this assignment to identify ways to more effectively manage this additional online reading.

Reading a novel for 10 minutes: 3.25 pages
Reading a textbook for 10 minutes: 2.25 pages
Reading a textbook for 10 minutes: 2.75 pages
Novel-reading speed: 19.5 pages per hour
Textbook-reading speed: 15 pages per hour
