History of Popular Culture—Week 1, Assignment 1

Hello, my name is Jon Bourne. I live in Fairbanks, Alaska, with my wife and daughter. I work at the local daily newspaper managing the company Web site. I also manage my own Web design company.

My family has had the most significant influence on who I am today. I have always been encouraged to be self-motivated and industrious: I finished high school in three years; I paid off my four-year automobile loan three years early; I run my own business. I was raised to think for myself and make decisions based on my beliefs.

I’ve never been one to conform to my surroundings. I prefer practicality over popularity.

Technically speaking, verbs are not for describing; that is the purpose of an adjective. To fulfill this requirement, though, I will say that the verb that best “describes” me is flourishing: I am growing and developing in a healthy and vigorous way as the result of a particularly favorable environment, both at work and at home. My business is prospering, and I am venturing into new territory pursuing a degree through AIO.

Strategies for Online Learning—Week 1, Assignment 1

I attended the University of Alaska Fairbanks for two years in the Computer Science program pursuing a bachelor’s degree. I was hired out of my sophomore year by the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, Fairbanks’ local daily newspaper, where I have worked for four years as the New Media Manager.

I desire to further my education to better serve my employer as well as to learn more about emerging technologies and make myself more marketable to other potential employers.

The largest obstacle I foresee in the pursuit of my bachelor’s degree will be managing my time effectively between work, school and my family.
